Sherborne Lake

A rustle in the grasses

murmuration in the reeds

wind puff and shaking pendulums -

swing spider, swing -

grasshopper chirr from distant sunny bank

and smell of new-mown hay.

Laughter, soft voices in the willow,

otter splash and water swirl

hole sequestered home of vole

and swallow chatter

dappled sunlight and slow dim waters

moving 'neath a canopy of sinuous green.

Sallow leaves are shaking

voices in the withy,

leaf voices - boy voices

mutter, still then silent

save for wind puff            

murmuration in the grasses and rustling in the reeds.
